Alternative debates: American-style perestroika
Recently, the Chicago Hilton has hosted third-party debates between off-brand candidates moderated by ex-CNN star Larry King. Though the event was ignored by all major channels, it attracted thousands on the web and didn’t look second-rate.
This Tuesday night saw clashes of ideas and not a sideshow of classy outfits and politically active wives.
Though two candidates were left-leaning, all the four were gripped with two passions – to put an end to a two-party system to which ex Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson a referred as a “duopoly” dominated by the Republican/Democrat party, and to stop counterproductive wars overseas.
Libertarian Gary Johnson, the Green Party’s Jill Stein, ex New Mexico Governor Virgil Goode of the Constitution Party and Rocky Anderson of the Justice Party came out equal on these issues.
Surprisingly, the Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson had an even stronger anti-military stance than the leftists. Thus, he stated:
We need defense and not offense or nation-building. We are propping up foreign dictators that are on our side as opposed to the other side. Whom are we supporting? We are funding Syrian insurgents and they are made up of jihadists! Didn’t we learn anything from Afghanistan, where we funded bin Laden?
